Cytopathology has been the backbone of the institute, ever since its inception as the Cytology Research Centre (CRC) in 1979. The major focus of the Division is to provide comprehensive cancer screening and diagnostic services, especially cervical cancer screening using cytology, fine needle aspiration cytology and histopathology. In addition, high quality research in major cancers like breast, cervix and oral cavity is undertaken in conjunction with the clinical and molecular divisions. The Division of Cytopathology is also involved in human resource development by conducting Hands-on training workshops on cervical cancer screening for pathologists from across the country. The Division has been accredited by the Indian Academy of Cytologists for short-term fellowships in Cytopathology for pathologists. The division is comprised of a team of cytopathologists and technical staff.
